UNTIL THE DAY I DIE, MY WORK AND MYSELF WILL ALWAYS BE A WORK IN PROGRESS. I invite you along this journey to see my progression as a photographer and as a human being.
Dance Study: Maria Monge
Dancer: Maria Monge
After viewing some of recent my Dance Study images, Maria wanted to get in on the action and the fun. This session was slightly different then any of my previous ones. I’ve photographed ballet, tap, and hip-hop in my recent sessions, however this session the dance style was more of a hybrid (or fusion) of dance styles. Maria has learned and excels at African, Hip-Hop, and House Dance, and her style is a blend of what she has learned. Which made preparing for this session tough because the internet couldn’t provided examples of her hybrid style, just the individual styles. But I knew one thing, if I could at least see the moves before she does them and I talk me through what to look for, I’d be good.
This shot was the result of tweaking a routine that she was going to do in which a jump was to be the shot she wanted me to focus on. Whilst going through the routine Maria added a step at the end of the jump that might look good for a shot. After doing it once more, she added a second step which became the money shot. And just for good measure we did this at least three more times.
Sidenote: This was the first time using Expo Imaging‘s FlashBender and it was used to help light this shot. I’d say it was pretty successful. Can’t wait to use it again in upcoming sessions as a fill light.
I enjoyed photographing Maria and got to learn a little bit more about her and her fusion dance style; looking forward to working with her again. And I hope y’all love the picture.
